What does WIC offer?

WIC Logo WIC is a nutrition program that provides nutrition and health education, healthy food and other services free of charge to Iowa families who qualify. WIC is health care, NOT welfare!

 

WIC provides:

But that’s not all! WIC also offers breastfeeding support, information on nutrition and health including maintaining a healthy weight, picky eaters , infant and child feeding.

Information for Clients & Families

**Eligibility Guidelines

  1. Clients must be one of the following:
    • Pregnant woman
    • Breastfeeding woman
    • Postpartum woman (6 months if NOT breastfeeding)
      (12 months IF breastfeeding)
    • Infants
    • Child under 5 years of age
  2. Meet income guidelines or currently enrolled in Medicaid
  3. Must be a resident of Iowa

**What to bring to a WIC appointment:

  • Proof of income. (Need ONE of the following)
    • Paycheck for household member who works
    • Unemployment benefit check
    • Income tax form
    • Signed letter from employer
    • Business records
  • Individuals with proof of current Medicaid Card meet WIC income eligibility.
  • Proof of identity for each family member applying for WIC.
  • Driver’s license or passport, birth certificate, insurance/Medicaid card, hospital/medical record, crib card, WIC ID folder from any state.)
  • Proof of residence. (Need ONE of the following)
    • Current Utility Bill (heat, electric, landline phone, water)
    • Rent or mortgage receipts
    • State/local government-issued document with current address (e.g. driver’s license, voter registration, public assistance of identification such as Medicaid, hawki-I,FIP.

**Monthly supplemental foods provided by WIC

WIC supplies monthly food vouchers for each WIC eligible family member.
WIC clients are able to purchase the following food items with their vouchers.

Milk5 to 6 gallons
Cheese1 – 2 pounds
Cereal36 ounces of WIC approved cereal
Eggs2 dozen
Juice6 – 48 ounces or 12 ounce containers of 100% fruit juice
Peanut Butter18 oz jar or 1 pound of dried beans
Infant formula9 cans of powdered or 31 cans of concentrated
Infant cereal2 boxes

WIC provides FREE immunizations . The following immunizations are available for uninsured and underinsured Iowa residents under the age of 19. Children receiving immunizations DO NOT have to be on WIC.

DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis)
Tdap (Tetanus and Pertussis)
Hib (Haemophilus Influenza Type B)
Polio
Hepatitus A
Hepatitus B
MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella)
Varicella (Chicken Pox)
Td (Tetanus)
Meningococcal
HPV - Gardisil

WIC participates in the “Vaccines for Children Program” (VFC). This government program provides vaccines at no cost. Children DO NOT need to be on WIC to receive vaccinations at WIC.

WIC does not charge for immunizations but welcomes all donations! Donations help to cover the cost of band aids, syringes, stickers, antiseptic soap and cleansers.

WIC at Edgerton Women’s Health Center provides immunizations on Tuesdays.

WIC at Friendly House provides immunizations on Wednesdays.
